What goes where

Aesthetic clinic waste, by container

Most aesthetic clinics produce small amounts of five waste streams. Each one needs its own container so it can be treated correctly.

Waste Typical examples Container
Botulinum toxin waste Needles and syringes used to inject toxin, plus part-used or expired toxin vials Purple-lid cytotoxic container
Other medicine-contaminated sharps Needles, cannulas and syringes used for dermal fillers, skin boosters and local anaesthetic Yellow-lid sharps bin
Unused or expired medicines Out-of-date hyaluronidase, local anaesthetic and other non-cytotoxic medicines Blue-lid medicines container
Offensive waste Used gloves, gauze, wipes and couch roll with no known infection risk Tiger bag
Infectious waste Items contaminated from a client with a known or suspected infection Orange bag

Microneedling cartridges, blades and lancets also go in a sharps bin. Tell us your treatments and we will confirm the right containers. Read more about sharps bins by lid colour.

Avoid these

Five common waste mistakes in aesthetic clinics

1. Toxin in the wrong bin

Most UK waste carriers classify botulinum toxin as cytotoxic. Toxin needles and part-used vials go in a purple-lid container for high-temperature incineration, never in a yellow-lid bin, down the sink or in general waste.

2. Overfilled sharps bins

Never fill past the fill line, and lock the final closure before collection. Overfilled bins are a needlestick risk and can be refused by the carrier.

3. Everything in orange bags

Most clinic consumables are offensive waste, not infectious. Using tiger bags where appropriate is compliant and usually cheaper.

4. No paperwork on file

Hazardous waste needs a consignment note for every collection, kept for at least three years. See our guide to waste transfer and consignment notes.

5. Taking bins home

Clinic waste is business waste, even for mobile practitioners. It cannot go in household bins or council clinical waste collections.

FAQs

Aesthetic clinic waste questions

How much does clinical waste collection cost for an aesthetic clinic?

It depends on how many bins you fill, which waste streams you produce and how often you need collections. Small clinics usually pay per collection or a small monthly fee. Send us your details and we will reply with a clear written price.

How should I dispose of leftover botulinum toxin?

Most UK waste carriers classify botulinum toxin as cytotoxic waste. Part-used or expired vials, and the needles and syringes used to inject toxin, go in a purple-lid cytotoxic container for high-temperature incineration. Never pour leftover toxin down the sink.

Which bin do filler syringes go in?

Used filler syringes, needles and cannulas go in a yellow-lid sharps bin. Hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite fillers are non-cytotoxic, so they do not need a purple-lid bin.

I am a mobile practitioner. Can you collect from me?

Yes. We collect from your business base address. Clinic waste must not go in household bins or council clinical waste collections.

Can I book a one-off collection?

Yes. We arrange single collections with no ongoing contract, which suits clinics with low or irregular volumes.

What paperwork do I need to keep?

Each collection of hazardous waste, such as sharps and medicines, comes with a consignment note that you must keep for at least three years. Non-hazardous offensive waste needs a waste transfer note kept for at least two years.
