The Eustace Pinhole Occluder by Haag-Streit is a handheld ophthalmic screening tool used during routine eye examinations to differentiate refractive errors from pathological causes of reduced visual acuity. If a patient's vision improves when looking through the pinholes, the cause is likely refractive rather than disease-related.

Design

Built in a lorgnette (hand-held paddle) style, the occluder features five precisely drilled pinholes in one eye-piece. The multi-pinhole arrangement allows enough light to reach the retina while eliminating peripheral blur, giving the clinician a quick chair-side indication of whether corrective lenses may restore normal vision.

Additional Features

  • Integrated pupillary distance (PD) rule — measure the distance between the patient's pupils without reaching for a separate instrument
  • Built-in fixation point for directing the patient's gaze during examination
  • Lightweight plastic construction, easy to clean between patients

Typical Use

Commonly used by optometrists, ophthalmologists, GPs, occupational health practitioners and school screening teams. A standard item in any ophthalmic examination kit alongside a Snellen chart.
