NanoShuttle-PL by Greiner Bio-One is a ready-to-use nanoparticle assembly of gold, iron oxide and poly-L-lysine that magnetises living cells for three-dimensional (3D) cell culture. Once added to a standard monolayer culture, the nanoparticles attach to cell membranes within minutes, allowing cells to be levitated, aggregated or patterned using external magnets — no specialist scaffolds or gels required.

How It Works

Add NanoShuttle-PL to adherent cells overnight. The nanoparticles bind electrostatically to cell surfaces. The next day, place a magnet above or below the culture plate to levitate or concentrate the cells into dense 3D structures (spheroids, rings or sheets) that better mimic in-vivo tissue architecture than flat monolayers.

Key Features

  • Rapid magnetisation — cells are ready for 3D assembly within hours
  • Scaffold-free — cells self-assemble; extracellular matrix is produced by the cells themselves
  • Compatible with standard multi-well plates — no proprietary hardware beyond the holding magnet
  • Biocompatible — does not interfere with common downstream assays (viability, gene expression, histology)
