Collection: Insulin Syringes

Insulin Syringes

Insulin syringes have a fine, fixed needle and a barrel marked in insulin units rather than millilitres, so doses can be measured accurately. We stock insulin syringes from BD, Embecta (Micro-Fine) and SOL-M for GP surgeries, diabetes clinics, community nurses, care homes and veterinary practices.

Choosing a syringe size

  • 0.3ml (30 units): small doses, with clear half-unit or one-unit markings
  • 0.5ml (50 units): doses up to 50 units
  • 1ml (100 units): larger doses

Choose the smallest syringe that holds the full dose, as smaller barrels are easier to read accurately.

U-100 and U-40

The syringe must match the insulin concentration. U-100 syringes are used with standard U-100 insulin, which is the strength used for most people with diabetes in the UK. U-40 syringes are for U-40 insulin, which is mainly used in veterinary practice. Using the wrong syringe gives the wrong dose.

Needle length and safety syringes

Shorter needles (6mm or 8mm) are suitable for most patients and reduce the risk of injecting into muscle. Safety insulin syringes such as the BD SafetyGlide and SOL-CARE cover or retract the needle after use, which helps healthcare employers meet the Sharps Regulations 2013. For insulin pens, see our guide to insulin pen needles and syringes.
