Ophthalmoscopes

An ophthalmoscope lets you examine the back of the eye, including the retina, optic disc and blood vessels, and check the red reflex. It is a core instrument for GPs, emergency and paediatric clinicians, optometrists and medical students. We stock ophthalmoscopes from Welch Allyn, KaWe and Luxamed, from pocket models to full-size PanOptic heads.

Types of ophthalmoscope

  • Standard (coaxial) ophthalmoscopes such as the Welch Allyn Coaxial and KaWe Eurolight are the traditional direct ophthalmoscope, with a wheel of lenses to bring the fundus into focus.
  • PanOptic ophthalmoscopes from Welch Allyn give a much wider view of the fundus than a standard head, which makes it easier to see the optic disc through an undilated pupil.
  • Pocket ophthalmoscopes such as the Welch Allyn Pocket LED and Pocket PLUS LED are compact and battery powered, popular with students and clinicians who work across sites.

Heads, handles and bulbs

Many ophthalmoscopes are sold as a head only and fit onto a separate power handle. Check that the head matches your handle's brand and voltage (for example 2.5V or 3.5V) before you order. LED models give a brighter, whiter light and longer lamp life than halogen. If you also need an otoscope, a diagnostic set combines both heads with a handle and case, often at a lower cost than buying them separately. Read our guide to otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes.
