Body Composition Analysers
A body composition analyser estimates fat mass, muscle mass and body water as well as weight, using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A small, safe electrical signal passes through the body, and its resistance is used to estimate the different tissues. These readings give a fuller picture than BMI alone, which is why they are used in weight management, nutrition, sports medicine and research.
Medical and non-medical models
Professional analysers such as the seca mBCA 515 and the Marsden MBF-6010 give more detailed results and can print or export them. Personal body composition scales such as the seca 804 and the Kinetik Wellbeing analyser are simpler and are designed for home or general wellbeing use, not for clinical diagnosis.
Getting consistent results
Readings change with hydration, recent meals and exercise. For comparable results, measure at the same time of day, before exercise, with an empty bladder and bare feet. Body composition analysers are not usually suitable for people with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker; check the manufacturer's instructions.
